INTERNATİONAL JURİST UNİON URGES BANGLADESH GOVERNMENT TO ENSURE DEMOCRATİC SPACE FOR ALL AND RELEASE ALL POLİTİCAL DETAİNEES.
International Jurists Union (IJU), an international Lawyers’ organisation promoting for justice and human rights across the globe has come to know from the international media that the Bangladesh government has reduced the space of democracy for the opposition.
We are very much concerned, in particular, that Dr Shafiqur Rahman ,the leader of Jamaat-e-Islami, Bangladesh’s second largest opposition party, has been arrested days after he announced the party would join opposition movement demanding the restoration of election time independent government and Mirza fakhrul, the secretary general of BNP, the largest opposition has been arrested on the eve of their national demonstration to take place on 10th December.
we would like to remind Bangladesh to discharge its obligations under international law in particular ‘’International covenant on civil and political rights’’ which Bangladesh has ratified by ensuring democratic space, right to freedom of expression and assembly.
We are calling on Bangladesh authorities as part of its commitments to international treaties to release all political detainees, establish rule of law and ensure democratic space.
Yours Sincerely,
Secretary General
International Jurists Union
