Statement by the International Union of Jurists
Another Assad-era massacre in Syria: The Killing of Dr. Rania Al-Abbasi and Her Family:
The International Union of Lawyers strongly condemns the killing of Dr. Rania Al-Abbasi, her husband, and their six children following the emergence of information and evidence regarding the fate of this family, who were forcibly disappeared for years.
This crime constitutes a grave violation of the right to life and the fundamental principles protecting civilians, and also reflects the scale of suffering endured by thousands of Syrians who have been victims of forced abduction, disappearance, arbitrary detention, torture, and extrajudicial killings.
The Union emphasizes that this case, regardless of its symbolic importance and profound humanitarian impact, is just one of thousands awaiting truth and justice.
It stresses that serious crimes, including murder, abduction, and torture, are not subject to statutes of limitations and that those responsible must be held legally accountable regardless of their position or status. Our Union calls on the judicial authorities and relevant institutions to continue investigations, uncover all the circumstances surrounding this crime, preserve evidence, prosecute those responsible, and guarantee the right of the victim families to learn the truth and receive compensation.
Ensuring justice for the victims and holding those responsible for grave violations accountable remains a fundamental condition for establishing the rule of law, consolidating civil peace, and preventing the recurrence of such crimes.
Mercy for the victims, justice for their families, and accountability according to the law are obligations in the name of human conscience…
